Is authority a lost virtue?
‘Wherever there is a man who exercises authority, there is a man who resents authority.’ - Oscar Wilde. I was reminded of the truth of this statement recently. I was driving back from having taken a walk with a friend (within the 5-K zone), and I was stopped by a Garda.
Can self-doubt be good?
If you could choose one aspect of yourself to shape the rest of your life, which one would you choose? Probably not self-doubt.
How to feel on top of things?
A friend informed me last year, to my near-horror, that I was too ‘old school’ when I told her I needed to write things down in a diary, and like to keep a ‘To Do’ Checklist. She keeps up-to-date with the latest tech news, and has tried and tested every Time Management app, planning tool, and productivity management system that one can think of.
Coping with viral fear: lockdown number 3
Here we are again, third lockdown, this one more serious than the rest. I don’t know about you, but my anxiety was at its highest over the holidays and into January. What a relief we are now in February!
What does real beauty mean to you?
In my mind, I divide beauty up into two types: visible and invisible. Visible beauty is the obvious one. A physically attractive person, an ornate building, a person’s movement or dance, the colours and shapes of the natural world, an exquisitely decorated room.

The stories we cling to even when they fail us
Once upon a time...ah, the start to our beloved fairy tales. Stories that teach us how to dream, how to be brave, how to persevere and what to build our houses with (bricks of course). But what about the stories we make up, the stories we create in our minds to make sense of the world? Sometimes created unconsciously, these stories can influence our actions and beliefs for years to come.
Why Greek mythology is important to read
Over Christmas I was attempting to read – not Twitter Feeds or Memes, but Books. We all know the theory. But the practice is a different matter.

Revisiting the film ‘Working Girl’
On an 80s movie binge a few months back, we rented the film Working Girl, a Cinderella tale of class and gender struggles in the cutthroat financial world of Wall Street. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but I have to say that it surprised me.

This pandemic means that we are all forced to live day-to-day. It's not possible to plan ahead or look forward to much. This can cause quite a bit of stress and anxiety in our lives. Letting go of the need for a quick fix
I don’t know about you, but I’m impatient. I have trouble learning an instrument because I find it tedious to work on the basics. I want to get right in and start with a song. And I don’t want to play it poorly, I want to start at the level of a virtuoso, I want to be an instantaneous expert. It’s taken me a very long time to learn that it just doesn’t work that way.
Books, glorious books, stuck for something to read?

Why I love reading?
A rainy day, a cup of tea, a blanket, a good book. This is an image I conjure up in my head on a regular basis. The reality is a different story.
Losing yourself in Literature
Can you remember the last time that you escaped for hours and even weeks through a good book? A book where time stopped and you were positively enthralled?
When was the last time you took time for inspiration?
So, if you can, claim some space and time today. Design it into your life. Get a little distance from the have-tos (they’re going to feel really pressing and you might think to yourself ….
