Four characteristics of the "mentally tough"

Following on from another great Hearts+Minds overnight getaway, with a theme of ‘Mistakes: the portal for discovery,' we discussed so much - from creativity to adventure, to friendship and marriage, to acceptance and imperfection.

Some of the topics got us thinking about resilience and toughness and what we might need to consider about the phrase ‘mental toughness.’ This is a topic we’ve touched on before in this blog post offering us some tips on how to ‘become’ mentally tough.

Tips are one thing but what about the characteristics of someone who is mentally tough? We all know someone who encapsulates this idea so what characteristics do they have in common?

  1. They know their goal.

No matter what we’re aiming for in life, it’s important to have a clearly defined goal. It is that goal that guides our thoughts and our actions. Whether it’s a life changing career move or a simple new year resolution, If we know what we’re working towards, we can set the course correctly and it’s then much easier to deal with any wrong turns.

  2. They know the boundaries

Mentally tough people know their boundaries and can hold to them without worrying about what others may think. They can say no, especially to the things that might jeopardise their goals. Sometimes we might mistakenly believe that holding boundaries is actually a lack of charity to others but justice is a virtue too - it teaches us to assume our responsibilities and give others their due - but not to be a walkover.

  3. They have a growth mindset

Difficulties are an opportunity rather than a hindrance, is the mantra for living with a growth mindset. Mentally tough people know how to use this mindset to ‘reframe’ any difficulties and they’re not afraid to make mistakes. It’s only when we make mistakes that we learn and grow and those who are mentally tough recognise this.

  4. They can show vulnerability

We all know it is much easier at times not to challenge or push ourselves beyond what we think we’re capable of, but people who are mentally tough aren’t afraid to put themselves out of their comfort zone, or to admit that doing so is difficult for them! Part of being vulnerable is knowing when to ask for help and direction when we’re unsure. We might think it’s a sign of weakness but it’s actually the opposite.
